- don't get left behind.
don't get left behind.
the hidden cost of a broke mindset
“That greedy son of a bitch!”
We were in the kitchen,
I was sitting and my dad was pacing back and forth having one of his outbursts.
He just had a business deal gone sour.
At this time I was in sales, so I was interested in money habits and the beliefs that shape them.
“What makes you say he's greedy?” I asked.
“He's a rich farmer, they all are.” He said.
“Do you think all rich people are greedy?” I asked.
“Of course! if they weren’t, then how do they have so much money?” He snapped back.
That was when I knew I was programmed with limiting beliefs around money.
I had those beliefs my whole life, I just never noticed them so in my face like that.
When I got back to work selling door-to-door,
I found myself in a tough spot.
We sold home security, and most of the presentation is done in the home, at the kitchen table.
I was with a nice young couple when I was approaching my least favorite part.
The close.
As we sat at their kitchen table, deciding what products they think they would use,
I got scared.
It was almost time for me to pull out the contract and ask for a signature.
This is the scary part because you don't know 100% if they are going to sign or give an objection.
But why was I so afraid?
All they could really say was “no” right?
Wrong.
The reason I was so afraid as these two people who were clearly interested in protecting their home waited for me to make my move,
Was because I felt like a scammer.
I worked with one of the biggest home security companies in the world, ADT.
So it wasn't because we were some unknown brand with no reputation.
It was because I had a limiting belief around sales, marketing, or anything involving money and how to collect it.
So when it was time to ask a perfectly normal and logical question about money,
I panicked.
This was my biggest problem in sales.
And since I believe that EVERYONE is in sales whether they like it or not.
It was a big problem.
I pulled the agreement out of my binder, composed myself, and slide it across the table at the couple.
“Perfect, so if that all makes sense, I just need a signature here,” I said.
My heart was pounding.
You could cut the tension with a knife.
“…I think we need to think about it.” They said.
Damn.
Now usually this is where you handle the objection and proceed,
But from a guy who believed all salespeople are snake oil scammers,
I took the loss on the chin.
Which was the worst because that was my first opportunity all day to make a sale.
I just worked 8 hours for free.
So where am I going with this?
People that believe money is evil, and all rich people are greedy,
Unconsciously sabotage any effort to make money.
Because it doesn't align with your morals.
The best way you can counteract this limited belief is to stick to a consistent routine of affirmations.
“I want more money, and that's okay.”
Was one that I used to break through my inner bullshit.
People who have a broke identity will scramble to make what they have always made.
And spend stupidly when they make more than expected.
Because they feel,
“That's not the type of person I am.”
Change the way you see yourself,
And your health, wealth, relationships,
Will change effortlessly.
